A Research of Factors Affecting the Social Participation among Patients With Dementia

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting social participation among dementia patients and to provide baseline data to help inform the development of effective intervention programs for social participation in this group.

Methods: Research articles were searched for in the RISS, EBSCOhost, Scopus, PubMed, and ProQuest databases. The main search terms were ¡°dementia or Alzheimer¡± and ¡°social participation or social activities or leisure or IADL¡± (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living). A total of 358 studies were originally screened; eventually, 10 studies were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Result: The factors affecting social participation among dementia patients were categorized into six groups: cognitive factors, which were further classified into memory, executive function, language, and global function; demographic factors, which were further classified into sex and age; socioeconomic factors, which included educational level, socioeconomic class, and family and social networks; neuropsychiatric factors, which included neuropsychiatric behavior and depression; occupational therapy interventions; and assistive technology.

Conclusions: This study analyzed factors affecting social participation among patients with dementia through a systematic review of 10 studies. These results could potentially be utilized as baseline data to develop intervention programs for social participation among dementia patients.
